NEW YORK — Columbia wrestling, as well as track and field, men's squash, fencing and men's swimming and diving are featured in this week's edition of Lions on the Road. Every week, GoColumbiaLions.com will be using "Lions on the Road" to preview that week's upcoming games and events happening off campus.
WRESTLING
Columbia opens the EIWA slate with a dual match at Army on Sunday. The Lions are coming off a narrow 22-21 loss to No. 23 West Virginia in the Battle on the Boardwalk where Nick Babin, Kai Owen, Lennox Wolak, Aaron Ayzerov and Jack Wehmeyer earned wins. Columbia is 1-4 in dual matches this season as all five have come against teams ranked inside the top 25. Sunday's dual match will be the first of the season against an unranked opponent.
Seven wrestlers are currently featured in one or more rankings by Intermat, FloWrestling and WrestleStat. As a team, Columbia holds the No. 27 spot in the FloWrestling and WrestleStat dual rankings entering Sunday's matchup.
TRACK AND FIELD
Columbia's indoor track & field season continues this weekend, as the Lions compete at the Penn 10-Team Select Meet at Ocean Breeze in Staten Island. Columbia is coming off a great opening weekend to the indoor season earlier in December, with success at the Rutgers Holiday Classic and BU Season Opener. In Boston, Phoebe Anderson and Elia Ton-That broke the Columbia indoor 5000m record, while at the Armory, Lucy Henkel, Caleb Gartner, Rory Clare, Michael Danzi, Yoosang Kim and Jada Mia Puryear won events to open the season. The Lions will look to build upon that great start, and continue dominating on Saturday.
MEN'S SQUASH
The Columbia men's squash team is back in action for the first time in 2024 for a neutral site match against No. 15 Western Ontario on Sunday in Poughkeepsie, New York. The Lions are 4-0 and are looking to remain undefeated heading into the start of Ivy League play on January 19 against Princeton. Columbia sits at No. 6 in the College Squash Association rankings heading into Sunday's match.
In the last time out, Columbia posted a dominating 8-1 victory over No. 11 Williams College. Franklyn Smith, Harold Castiaux, Ryan Chen, Jacob Bulbulia and Sameer Saxena dominated to win in three games. Laszlo Godde, Paarth Ambani and Rutvik Rau also posted wins for the Lions. After clinching the win against Drexel in the previous match, Godde battled from two games down as he won three games in a row to secure a 9-11, 8-11, 11-9, 11-4, 11-6 win over Asher Leavy in the No. 3 spot.
FENCING
Fencing returns to the strips for its first collegiate competition of 2024 when it heads to the Penn State Invitational. The Lions have five dual matches on the schedule, beginning at 9:45 a.m. when the Lions take on Penn. Columbia will also face Haverford (men only) and Temple (women only), Penn State, Yale and North Carolina.
The men's team checks in at 11-0 and is ranked No. 2 in the nation, according to the US Fencing Coaches Association SPI rankings. The women are 10-1 and No. 3 in SPI.
MEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
Men's swimming and diving opens the new year with a meet on the road against Brown on Saturday, January 13. In the last dual meet of 2023, Columbia fell to the Crimson despite event wins from Demirkan Demir, Joshua Corn, and Noah Czelusta. The Lions will look to defeat the Bears on Saturday for the second consecutive season after earning a win at Perrcy Uris Natatorium, 180-120, last season.
