Wrestling, men's and women's swimming and diving in action
NEW YORK — Columbia wrestling, as well as men's and women's swimming and diving are featured in this week's edition of Lions on the Road. Every week, GoColumbiaLions.com will be using "Lions on the Road" to preview that week's upcoming games and events happening off campus.
WRESTLING
The Lions will head to Las Vegas to compete in their second tournament of the season so far. Columbia is coming off a short break after hosting No. 9 Michigan and No. 6 Ohio State in a weekend of home duals. Columbia will be joined by elite competition at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invite as wrestlers from Air Force, Appalachian State, Arizona State, Binghamton, Navy, Northwestern, Ohio State, Ohio, California Baptist, Cal Poly, Cal State Bakersfield, Campbell, Oklahoma State, Oregon State, Purdue, Rider, Citadel, Cornell, Harvard, Sacred Heart, South Dakota State, Stanford, North Carolina, Hofstra, Iowa State, LIU, Maryland, Northern Iowa, Utah Valley, Virginia Tech, Wyoming, Michigan, Morgan State, Nebraska and North Carolina State will make up the field.
In the first event of the season, senior Angelo Rini (133), junior Aaron Ayzerov (184) and sophomore Jack Wehmeyer (197) each posted third place finishes in their weight categories at the Clarion Open. Columbia finished second as a team at the event behind Ohio State.
WOMEN'S SWIMMING & DIVING
The Lions are ready for their mid-season invitational, and will head to East Meadow, New York to compete in the ECAC Winter Championships this weekend. The event will begin on Friday, December 1 and run through Sunday, December 3. Prelims will begin at 10:00 a.m. each day with finals of each event scheduled for 6:00 p.m. later in the night. Columbia will look to defend its 2022 title, after coming in first place in the competition last year. A recap of last season's competition, including all of the Lions' event winners, can be found HERE. Columbia is coming into this weekend with a 1-2 record, most recently losing to Harvard despite a couple more strong swims from Emily MacDonald who will looks to dominate ECACs once again.
MEN'S SWIMMING & DIVING
The Lions return to the pool this weekend, making a trip to New Jersey for their mid-season invitational. Columbia will participate in Princeton's Big Al Invite which will begin on Friday, December 1 and run through Sunday December 3. Last year, the Lions finished third at the Big Al Invite and will hope to improve upon that positioning this year in a meet with incredibly tough competition. The Lions come into the meet with a 2-2 record, with wins over Penn and Yale. The likes of Adam Wu, Demirkan Demir, and first year Joshua Corn will look to continue their string of strong performances.
