Columbia will compete at the Soldier Salute December 29-30 in Iowa
CORALVILLE, Iowa – The Columbia wrestling team is back in action to compete in the Soldier Salute starting Friday at Xtream Arena in Coralville, Iowa.
Session I begins at 10 a.m. CT on Friday followed by Session II at 3:30 p.m. Session III is set for 11 a.m. on Saturday and the tournament will conclude with Session IV at 5 p.m. The Soldier Salute will be streamed live on BTN+ and fans can follow live results via Smoothcomp. Video from each match will be embedded into the Smoothcomp brackets after 24 hours for fans to be able to rewatch matches.
Columbia will send its squad to compete against wrestlers from Bellarmine, Iowa State, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Navy, Nebraska, North Carolina, Northern Iowa, Oregon State, Purdue, South Dakota State, Virginia, Virginia Military Institute and Wyoming.
The Lions return to the mat for the first time since December 10 when Columbia earned an impressive 28-21 dual win over No. 19 Northern Iowa. Kai Owen recorded a win via fall over No. 6 Cael Happel at 141 before Richard Fedalen and Kyle Mosher also secured wins via fall. Angelo Rini, Lennox Wolak and Jack Wehmeyer also posted wins to lockdown the upset victory over Northern Iowa.
Columbia will face several similar opponents as wrestlers from Iowa and Northern Iowa will be included in the field. This will be the third straight competition in Iowa for the Lions after battling Iowa and Northern Iowa in duals earlier this month.
"The Soldier Salute will be interesting because Iowa and Northern Iowa will both be there, so we are going to be chasing down the matches we lost at Iowa and then the guys from Northern Iowa are going to be chasing us down to get those wins back against us," Rini said. "There will be some fire there I think, but we are going to be training hard over the break so I think we will capitalize off what we have done the last couple of weeks."
