Laszlo Godde clinches the win for the Lions
NEW YORK – With all eyes on Laszlo Godde's match, Godde battled to win the last two games of his match in the No. 3 spot to post an 11-9, 8-11, 11-8, 11-9 win over Drexel's Fritiof Jacobsson. The win clinched No. 7 Columbia's 5-4 win over No. 6 Drexel to continue the Lions' undefeated start to the season at 3-0.
"The men had a gritty win against a team that always fights hard," Kenneth W. Torrey Head Coach of Squash Chris Sachvie said. "It took nine strong efforts to get our five wins. Great performances on court eight where we took the number seven, eight and nine spots. A tidy victory from captain Harold Castiaux at number two allowed for first-year Laszlo Godde to come up big and clinch the fifth win at number three."
With two matches remaining, Columbia held a 4-3 lead over Drexel. Godde's win in the No. 3 spot clinched the win for the Lions. Ryan Chen capped off the day with a loss at the No. 6 spot.
Harold Castiaux, Paarth Ambani, Adam Goad and Rutvik Rau posted the other four wins for the Lions Sunday. Castiaux dominated in the No. 2 spot with a 13-11, 11-4, 11-1 win over Drexel's Youssef Bastawy. Rau also rolled in three games with an 11-4, 11-7, 11-2 victory against Charlie Taylor.
Ambani and Goad each earned wins in four games. Ambani split the first two games with Dumitru Goian before pulling away to win the final two games in a 12-10, 8-11, 11-6, 11-5 win. Goad lost the first game and bounced back to win the next three in a 6-11, 11-7, 11-4, 11-3 victory over Shomari Wiltshire.
