Wrestling, track and field, and men's and women's squash in action
NEW YORK — Columbia wrestling, as well as track and field and men's and women's squash are featured in this week's edition of Lions on the Road. Every week, GoColumbiaLions.com will be using "Lions on the Road" to preview that week's upcoming games and events happening off campus.
WRESTLING
The Lions continue the road stand in the Hawkeye State with two dual matches against opponents ranked in the top 20 of Intermat's dual match team rankings. Columbia will face No. 4 Iowa on Friday night at 8 p.m. ET to kickoff the weekend. The Lions will wrap up the weekend with a dual at No. 19 Northern Iowa at 3 p.m. ET Sunday.
Columbia transitions back into the dual schedule after competing at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invite last weekend. Nick Babin, Aaron Ayzerov, Jack Wehmeyer and Nolan Neves battled to the consolation round of eight in each of their weight divisions.
TRACK AND FIELD
Columbia's indoor season continues this weekend, as the Lions compete at the Yale Season Opener in New Haven on Saturday in what will be the team's final meet of 2023. Two Lions will look to defend wins from last year's Yale Season Opener, as Jada Mia Puryear (shot put) and Lailah Malone (weight throw) look to make it two in a row in their respective events. Columbia is a fresh off a great opening weekend to the indoor season last weekend, with success at the Rutgers Holiday Classic and BU Season Opener. In Boston, Phoebe Anderson and Elia Ton-That broke the Columbia indoor 5000m record, while at the Armory, Lucy Henkel, Caleb Gartner, Rory Clare, Michael Danzi, Yoosang Kim and Puryear won events to open the year.
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SQUASH
The Columbia squash teams hit the road to face Williams College on Saturday at 2 p.m. The No. 7 men's team is a perfect 3-0 on the season after defeating No. 6 Drexel last Sunday, 5-4. Laszlo Godde, Harold Castiaux, Paarth Ambani, Adam Goad and Rutvik Rau posted wins Sunday to help Columbia battle to take the upset win against Drexel. The Lions will look to stay undefeated when they meet No. 11 Williams College on Sunday.
The No. 10 women are 1-3 overall for the season after suffering a 7-2 loss to No. 6 Drexel last Sunday. Reigning College Squash Association (CSA) Women's National Champion Simmi Chan remained undefeated at 4-0 this season with a win over Drexel's Margot Prow in the No. 1 spot. Amal Izhar secured Columbia's second win of the day with a win over Drexel's Lydia Robinson in the No. 5 spot. The Lions will face Williams College, who is ranked No. 14 and also 1-3 to start the season.
