Men’s, Women’s Fencing Finish Second at Ivy League Championships

The No. 1 ranked men go 3-1 an finish second; the No. 2 ranked women go 5-1 an finish second; Nora Burke wins the women's sabre individual championship
ITHACA, N.Y. – The Columbia men's and women's fencing teams both finished in second place at the Ivy League Championships after each losing the final match of the day on Sunday to decide the champion. Nora Burke capped off the weekend with a 16-1 record in sabre to win the women's sabre individual championship.
The men got the day started with a match against Harvard to determine the Ivy League Champion. The Lions held a 5-4 lead through the first set of bouts before Harvard responded to take an 11-7 lead through 18 bouts. Columbia tried to start a rally, but Harvard clinched the win and then polished off a 16-11 final score to claim the Ivy League title.
Colby Harley posted an 8-4 record in sabre over the weekend as he finished in third place overall. Ashton Daniel finished second in foil with a 9-2 mark. Justin Haddad went 8-4 in epee and placed third.
The women cruised to the championship match on Sunday afternoon with two dominating wins over Yale and Harvard to start the day. The Lions posted a 21-6 win against Yale to start the day. Foil, epee, and sabre each went 7-2 in the match.
Columbia followed that up with a 20-7 win over Harvard to set up a championship match with undefeated Princeton. The Lions went 7-2 in epee and sabre, and 6-3 in foil in the big win over Harvard.
Princeton stole the momentum quickly in the last match of the day as the Tigers posted a 20-7 win over Columbia to capture the championship.
In addition to Burke's individual championship in sabre, seven Lions were recognized as First and Second Team All-Ivy. Justin Haddad (epee), Skyler Liverant (epee), Ashton Daniel (foil), Colby Harley (sabre), and Nora Burke (sabre) earned First Team All-Ivy honors. Zander Rhodes (foil) and Chloe Gouhin (sabre) earned Second Team All-Ivy honors.
Columbia fencing will be back in action on Wednesday when the Lions host the George Kolombatovich Historical Meet. Columbia will face NYU, Sacred Heart, and Vassar in the meet starting at 5:15 p.m. in the Dodge Fitness Center.
