Fencing Heads to NCAA Regionals Sunday

The Lions will send 12 men and 12 women to Cambridge Sunday with spots at the NCAA Championship on the line
NEW YORK - Columbia fencing will send the maximum 24 qualifiers (12 men, 12 women) to the NCAA Northeast Regionals in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on Sunday, March 12. The Lions will face off against the region's best during the one-day, eight-hour event.
The day begins with both epee fields and women's foil at 10 a.m. Men's foil debuts at 11 a.m. and sabre gets underway at 12:30 p.m.
The women's squad, which was recently voted No. 1 in the final USFCA Coaches Poll has nine of its 12 competitors seeded in the top eight. Individual Ivy League sabre champion Nora Burke checks in as the top seed, and first-year Tierna Oxenreider is also ranked No. 1 in epee. In foil, Delphine DeVore and Zander Rhodes.
Ethan Kushernik is the highest seed for the men, earning the No. 3 spot in epee. Ashton Daniel and Joon Paik are ranked No. 4 and 5, respectively, in foil, while Colby Harley drew the No. 4 spot in sabre.
NCAA Northeast Regional competition helps determine the qualifying fencers for the NCAA Division I National Championship, which will take place at Duke University from March 23-26. Columbia hopes to send 12 fencers to Durham.
Only Columbia's top two fencers for each of the six weapons (six men's and six women's) can qualify for the National Championships. In the end, the qualifiers are determined by a formula based on 60 percent weight on regional bouts and 40 percent weight on regular season results. No qualifiers are official until the NCAA's announcement on Tuesday, March 14, when NCAA Championship selections are posted.
