Swimming & Diving season comes to close at NCAA Championships
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- Senior diver Jonathan Suckow concluded his historic career on Friday evening in the three-meter diving competition at the 2023 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships in Minnesota. Suckow was named an NCAA All-American for the fourth time in his career (third time on the three-meter) after finishing seventh in the event with a score of 388.30.
The greatest diver in Columbia history, Suckow's illustrious career comes to a close having qualified for four NCAA Championships, and winning eight consecutive Ivy League Championships. He is the current Columbia varsity and pool record holder in both events, as well as the Ivy League Championship record holder in both events. His fourth place finish on the one-meter boards at the 2022 NCAA Championships was Columbia's highest finish since 1973. The list goes on and on of his many accolades and achievements.
Suckow was the top-seed entering tonight's three-meter finals after finishing in first place in this morning's prelims. Despite not finishing in first place, Suckow did have the highest scoring dive of the event.
Another historic day and performance for Jonathan," Head Diving Coach Scott Donie said. "It's impossible to put into words what Jonathan has meant to this program and to me personally. I am so fortunate to have had the opportunity and privilege to witness all of his record setting performances along with his personal transformation over the four years he competed for the Lions. The course of history has been forever changed for so many of us thanks to his dedication to Columbia and to our beautiful sport."
Suckow was on pace for his fifth career All-American honor Thursday in the one-meter event, but unfortunately things did not go as planned. Due to an unprecedented missed dive, Suckow finished 22nd in prelims and did not qualify for the finals.
Meanwhile, standout sophomore swimmer Demirkan Demir competed in the 100-breast and 200-breast at this year's NCAA Championships. He finished 23rd in the 100-breast with a time of 52.13, and took 20th in the 200-breast with a time of 1:52.72. Unfortunately, he just missed out on qualifying for the consolation finals in both events.
Following the conclusion of Saturday's events, the 2022-23 men's swimming and diving season has come to a close.
