Softball Falls In Doubleheader At Yale

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Columbia dropped both games of Friday's doubleheader at Yale with an 11-3 loss in game one and a 9-8 loss in extra innings in the second game.

The Lions drop to 6-13 overall and 2-3 in Ivy League play. Columbia will have a chance to take the series finale Sunday.

Game 1

Columbia found themselves in a hole early as Yale put up three runs in the bottom of the first inning and one run in the second to take an early 4-0 lead.

The Lions brought one run across in the top of the third. First-year Eleni Katsivalis led the inning off with a double to left center. Sophomore Maddie Souza followed with a base hit. She advanced to second on the throw as Katsivalis was thrown out at home plate. Junior Jaden Hill then hit a two-out double to right field that brought Souza home.

Yale responded with three runs in the bottom of the third frame to extend its lead, 7-1. The Bulldogs sealed the 11-3 run-rule victory with a four-spot in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Columbia added two runs in the fourth before the completion of the game. Sophomore Cami Neal launched her first home run of the season over the left field wall to start the inning. First-year Georgia Corey was walked later the inning. She later scored on a fielder's choice.

Junior right-hander Raquel Reyes (1-3) was charged with the loss in 2.2 innings of work. She allowed seven runs on six hits while walking three and striking out three. First-year left-hander Charlotte Laidler pitched 1.1 innings as she allowed three runs on three hits. First-year right-hander Sarah Mikami tossed 0.1 inning and gave up one run on one hit.

Game 2

The Columbia bats were hot to get the second game started. The Lions jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the middle of the second inning before Yale mounted a comeback and finished off a 9-8 win in extra innings.

Senior Megan Ryono hit a solo shot to left field to start the second game of the day. The solo shot was Ryono's second homer of the season. Junior Jaden Hill came to the plate next and smashed a ball over the left field wall to make it back-to-back solo home runs to get the game started.

Senior Bubba Gleaves followed with a double down the right field line. Sophomore Cami Neal continued her hot streak at the plate as she rolled a double down the left field line to score Gleaves for the third run of the inning. Neal scored later in the frame when junior Maddy Rifenberick singled through the left side to give the Lions a 4-0 lead.

The bats stayed hot heading into the second inning as Ryono led off the inning with a double to left field. Hill followed with a double to right center that scored Ryono. A Gleaves ground out moved Hill to third as Neal came to the plate. Neal recorded her second RBI double of the day as she launched a ball to center field the scored Hill and gave Columbia the 6-0 lead.

Yale did not back down as the Bulldogs posted a three-spot in the bottom of the second inning to cut the Columbia lead in half. The Bulldogs added another run in the bottom of the third before putting up a four-spot in the fifth inning to tie the game.

The Lions posted two more runs in the top of the fifth. Sophomore Caroline Palys got the frame started with a single to right field. Senior Dani Mandichak then stepped up and launched a two-run blast to center field in her first homer of the season.

Still tied at the end of the seventh, the game went into the eighth inning. The Lions went down in order in the top of the inning. The Bulldogs got the inning started with a lead off walk. A stolen base put a runner in scoring position with one out. A Yale double down the left field line scored the runner and sealed the win.
