Softball Drops Road Contest At Monmouth

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Monmouth scored runs in four-straight innings to defeat Columbia, 5-3 on Wednesday afternoon at the Monmouth University Softball Stadium. Columbia falls to 10-15 overall this season with a 6-3 mark in Ivy League play.

The Lions and Hawks played a scoreless first inning as first-year right-hander Sarah Mikami worked through a jam in the bottom of the frame and left the bases loaded to shut down a Monmouth scoring opportunity.

Columbia struck first in the second inning when first-year infielder Georgia Corey belted a two-run homer over the left field wall to give the Lions a 2-0 lead. The home run was Corey's second of the season and the 15th total for the team. Corey is credited with the first home run of the season when she hit a solo shot against UNCW on March 4.

Monmouth answered with a two-spot in the bottom of the third inning to tie the game. A two-RBI sac fly off the bat of Devin Coia brought two runs home after two Hawks singled earlier in the inning to get on base.

The Lions answered immediately with a run in the top of the fourth frame to re-take the lead, 3-2. Senior Bubba Gleaves drew a walk to get the inning started. With one out, first-year right fielder Eleni Katsivalis came to the plate and tripled to right field, scoring Gleaves. The hit marked Katsivalis' first triple of her Columbia career and just the third of the season for the Lions.

The Hawks tied the game again with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Eve Serrato stepped up to the plate with one out and hit a sac fly to right field that plated a run to tie the game, 3-3. Monmouth then took its first lead of the afternoon in the bottom of the fifth inning with an RBI single from Julia Thuer to put the Hawks up, 4-3.

Monmouth extended its scoring streak to four innings as Abby Warner hit a solo shot to left field to give the Hawks the 5-3 lead. Monmouth would hang on to the lead to take the win.

Jordan Hill (5-8) was charged with the loss as she came in and tossed 3-2 innings. She allowed three runs on three hits. Mikami got the start and fired 2.1 innings, allowing two runs on four hits.
