Fencing Picks Up Four Medals at Intercollegiate Fencing Invite in Hong Kong

Four Lions medaled at the event for Team USA
HONG KONG — Columbia fencing's Zach Binder, Justin Haddad, Chloe Gouhin and Vera Kong all reached the podium at the Hong Kong 2023 International Collegiate Fencing Invitational earlier this month. Haddad won gold in men's epee, while Gouhin and Kong finished 1-2 in women's sabre and Binder picked up a bronze medal in men's foil at the two-day event that featured 30 U.S. collegiates face off against students from three Chinese institutions.
Haddad won 5-of-6 bouts in the pool rounds and rolled to the finals to face Nicholas Ghanem Candela, where he picked up a 15-9 victory.
After a 2-2 start in the round-robin stages, Gouhin and Kong picked things up in the knockout rounds. Each Lion won their first two matches to set up an all-Columbia championship bout where Gouhin emerged, 15-12.
Binder reached the semifinals after a 15-0 (forfeit) in his first-round matchup and picked up a 15-11 triumph over Harvard's Kenjj Bravo to guarantee a medal before suffering a setback in the semifinals.
