Field Hockey Drops Ivy League Opener to Cornell

Bloom nets lone Lions goal

NEW YORK — Columbia field hockey fell to Cornell, 3-1, on Friday night at Columbia Field Hockey Complex.

The two teams' Ivy League opener got off to a fast start, with Cornell (2-2, 1-0) taking an early 1-0 lead less than three minutes into the match. Columbia (2-3, 0-1) responded quickly when Mckenzie Bloom scored just over a minute later to tie the score at 1-1.

The Big Red then re-took the lead 45 seconds after Bloom's goal. Polly Parsons found the back of the cage for Cornell to give the visitors a 2-1 advantage.

Grace Leahy scored the insurance for Cornell to make it 3-1 with just under five minutes until halftime. Antonia Packard was credited with the assist. The Big Red and Lions went scoreless in the second half. The Columbia defense prevented Cornell from getting a shot off in the final 30 minutes of play.

Cornell had seven shots (six on goal) compared to Columbia six shots (three on goal). Lions goalkeeper Katie Wimmer made all three of her saves in the first half.
