PHILADELPHIA – Columbia men's tennis senior Hugo Hashimoto won the ITA Northeast Regional singles championship Tuesday afternoon and qualified for the NCAA Singles Championships in the process. Hashimoto will now play in singles and doubles at the NCAA Championships in November after previously qualifying for doubles with partner, Michael Zheng.
 
The Lions saw success in singles and doubles action this weekend with Hashimoto and Nicolas Kotzen reaching the semifinals in singles, and the duos of Hashimoto and Jayden Templeman and Kotzen and Max Westphal advancing to the doubles semifinals. First-years Jung Hee You and Thanaphat Boosarawongse earned two wins in the qualifying draw to earn a spot in the main singles draw. You lost in the first round of the main draw, but Boosarawongse advanced to the second round of main draw singles.
 
Kotzen and Westphal defeated Top Nidunjianzan and Ellis Short (Princeton) to clinch a spot in the doubles finals, but fell short against No. 4 Filippos Astreinidis/Paul Inchauspe (Princeton) in a tight match.
 
In singles, No. 74 Kotzen fell to No. 84 Top Nidunjianzan (Princeton) in the semifinals as he came up just one win short of qualifying for the NCAA Individual Championships. Kotzen finished in third in singles with a walkover win against No. 11 Paul Inchauspe (Princeton) on Tuesday. Kotzen now has priority in competing at the ITA Sectional Championships starting November 7 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where he will have another chance to earn a spot in the NCAA Championships.
 
Hashimoto highlighted the trip to Philadelphia by winning the singles title and qualifying for the NCAA Championships in singles. Hashimoto cruised through the bracket, winning four straight matches in straight sets including a 6-3, 7-6(4) win over No. 11 Inchauspe in the semifinals Monday. Hashimoto dropped the first set of Tuesday's championship match against No. 84 Nidunjianzan before bouncing back to earn a 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 victory.
 
The NCAA Individual Championships begin Tuesday, November 19 and last until Sunday, November 24 in Waco, Texas.
