Michael Zheng and Hugo Hashimoto will compete in singles and doubles
WACO, Texas – Columbia men's tennis junior Michael Zheng and senior Hugo Hashimoto will represent the Lions in the singles and doubles bracket at the NCAA Championships this week at Baylor's Hurd Tennis Center.
Beginning this year, individual competitions will occur in the fall rather than the spring season. It's the start of a two-year pilot program, with team championships remaining in the spring. Individuals will compete in a 64-player singles tournament starting Tuesday and a 32-team doubles tournament starting Wednesday, with Baylor's Hurd Tennis Center as the hosting site.
Zheng qualified for the NCAA Championships in singles by winning three matches at the ITA All-American Championships earlier this fall. Zheng defeated No. 61 Devin Badenhorst (Baylor), No. 26 Dhakshineswar Suresh (Wake Forest) and No. 17 JC Roddick (Texas A&M) to advance to the quarterfinals and secure an automatic bid into the NCAA Championships.
The duo of Zheng and Hashimoto also punched their ticket to the NCAA Championships in the doubles bracket by advancing to the semifinals at the ITA All-American Championships. The duo defeated No. 41 Youcef Rihane/Alex Bulte (Florida State), No. 1 Petar Jovanovic/Benito Sanchez (Mississippi State) and No. 20 Julien Penzlin/Aleksi Lofman (LSU) to clinch an automatic berth into the NCAA Championships.
Hashimoto secured his spot in the singles bracket at the NCAA Championships by winning the singles bracket at the ITA Northeast Regional in October. Hashimoto posted six straight wins as he worked his way through the bracket. Hashimoto earned ranked wins against No. 11 Paul Inchauspe (Princeton) and No. 84 Top Nidunjianzan (Princeton) to win the regional.
Zheng enters the singles bracket as the No. 2 overall seed after finishing as the singles runner-up at the NCAA Championships back in May. Zheng became just the second person in program history to earn ITA All-American status in two consecutive seasons.
