Men’s Basketball Falls at UAlbany for First Loss this Season

The Lions’ longest winning streak in the country ended on Wednesday night

ALBANY, N.Y. — Columbia men's basketball took its first loss of the season at UAlbany, 88-73, on Wednesday night from Broadview Center. The defeat snapped Columbia's eight-game winning streak, which was the longest in the country.

Blair Thompson led the Lions (8-1) with 14 points (12 in the first half). Geronimo Rubio De La Rosa also tallied double-figures, recording 11 points. Thompson and Zine Eddine Bedri each grabbed six rebounds.

The Great Danes (6-3) had a 24-12 lead with 12:02 left in the first half. UAlbany jumped out to a 10-14 shooting start and went on a 10-0 run to take the 12-point lead until a Brown lay-up ended the run.

UAlbany's hot shooting start continued with the Great Danes drilling six of their first eight three-pointers. Columbia inched back into the deficit with a 7-0 run later in the half to bring UAlbany's lead down to 43-32 with 3:47 until the break.

The Great Danes later answered with its own 7-0 run to end the half in front, 55-38. UAlbany shot a walloping 62.9 percent from the floor (22-35) and 60 percent from three-point range (9-15) in the opening 20 minutes.

Not much separation occurred in the second half. Even with UAlbany's cooled off 31.3 percent shooting performance in the final half, Columbia couldn't cut into the lead. The Lions outscored UAlbany in the second half, 35-33. Columbia was 11-18 from the field in the half.

UAlbany had just 12 turnovers to the Lions' 19. The Great Danes had the slim advantage on the boards, out-rebounding Columbia, 31-30.

The Lions host USSMA on Saturday inside Schiller Court at Levien Gymnasium at 2 p.m.
