Aufrichtig earns his second honor for leading the men’s side and fifth overall
PRINCETON, N.J. — Columbia fencing's Michael Aufrichtig was named Ivy League Men's Coach of the Year Tuesday afternoon, as announced by the conference office. The honor marks the second time the 13-year head coach has won the award on the men's side and the fifth time overall.
The Lions captured their 42nd Ivy League title and eighth in the last ten years in Levien Gymnasium over the weekend. Sam Kumbla secured the individual men's foil championship after posting a 10-2 mark and three more Columbia men went on to earn All-Ivy League accolades.
Aufrichtig has now guided Columbia to 14 overall Ivy League championships (eight men's and six women's).
Additionally, the Ivy League announced its Academic All-Ivy League squad, which featured junior Justin Haddad (men's epee) and senior Vera Kong (women's sabre). Haddad, a Computer Science major from Bethesda, Maryland, and Kong, an Earth Institute major from Irvine, California, each serve as team captains.
The Lions wrap up the regular season Wednesday, February 14 at the George Kolombatovich Historical Meet, hosted by NYU. Columbia begins the tri-meet against the Violets at 5:15 p.m., followed by matchups with Sacred Heart and Vassar.
