The Lions’ victories over NYU capped a combined 6-0 mark at the tri-meet
NEW YORK — Columbia fencing showed all heart on Valentine's Day, with the men's and women's squads each posting 3-0 records at the George Kolombatovich Historical Meet on the campus of NYU on Wednesday evening. The Lions closed the regular season with wins over the host Violets, Sacred Heart and Vassar.
The results were even more impressive considering many senior Lions fenced in different weapons in their final dual matchups of their collegiate careers.
The women earned the Katy Bilodeau Trophy for the second straight year, while the men retained the Irving Martin Preschel Trophy for the third consecutive season after victories over the Violets to begin the competition. Foil and epee each won their weapons to lift the men to a 15-12 win over NYU. First-years Enoch Xiao and Ethan Xiao went 3-0 in foil, while Ethan Kushernik was 3-0 in epee to spark the Lions. On the women's side, sabre stole the show with Tamar Gordon, Chloe Gouhin and Chloe Szeto sweeping the Violets in a 16-11 decision.
In round two, the women coasted to a 22-5 win over Sacred Heart. Nika Filippov, Olive Lee and Mina Yamanaka used an 8-1 mark in epee to propel the Lions to victory. The men were strong all around in a 19-8 win over the Pioneers. Nick Harvey (sabre), Kushernik (epee) and Zachary Zusin (foil) each went 3-0 in the matchup.
Both teams picked up identical 16-11 victories to wrap things up against Vassar. Women's sabre continued to dominate, going 8-1. For the men, Jackson McBride (sabre) and Kushernik (epee) rolled to 3-0 marks to push Columbia to its final dual win of the season.
The Lions are back in action Sunday, March 10, for the NCAA Regionals, which will be hosted by LIU in Brookville, New York.
