HANOVER, N.H. –
Abbey Hsu became the greatest scorer in the history of Columbia University, which helped propel the women's basketball team to a fifth straight victory, 80-56, over Dartmouth on Friday night at Leede Arena.
Just as her predecessor Camille Zimmerman did in 2018, Hsu broke the mark at the free throw line. Just two points away from the record, she got fouled on a 3-point attempt at the 6:46 mark of the third quarter. She missed the first, but sank the second to tie Zimmerman and third to stand alone at the top with 1,974 career points, more than any man or woman to don a Columbia jersey.
"It was very special because my family came out and everyone was clapping … It made me smile," said Hsu when
talking about the moment after the game. "Just to be up there with people like Camille and all of those other people is such an honor. She texted me before the game and was like, 'Go get that thing. Embrace the moment.' It means a lot to have her support and, just like she said, records are meant to be broken. I wouldn't be surprised if someone on this team, currently, comes and breaks my record and I hope they do."
The game seemed secondary although Columbia (17-5, 8-1 Ivy) never played like it was. Hsu and first-year
Riley Weiss each netted a game-high 17 points, while
Kitty Henderson and
Perri Page also scored in double figures with 10 points apiece. In total, all 11 Lions that dressed found the scoring column.
Susie Rafiu tacked on nine points and a game-high eight rebounds.
Dartmouth (6-15, 0-9 Ivy) was led by a trio in double figures with Clare Meyer netting a team-high 13 points and six rebounds. Despite her efforts, the Lions dominated the glass, 43-26, outscoring the Big Green 14-5 in second-chance points and 14-0 in transition.
However, the night belonged to Hsu.
"I'm extremely happy for Abbey to hit this next milestone in her career," head coach
Megan Griffith said. "We all knew this was possible when she first stepped foot on campus. A huge credit to her work ethic and consistency. She said it best in the locker room – we're not done yet. Our team is locked in on the next challenge on Sunday."
Already the Ivy League's all-time leader in 3-pointers, Hsu went 3-for-6 from long range on the evening to up her career total to 351, the fourth-most among active Division I players in the country – only Hsu and Caitlin Clark average 3.00 or more made threes per game in their careers.
"It's just one of the moments that you have to enjoy so I was happy I was able to enjoy it with my teammates," Hsu concluded.
The Lions will travel down to Cambridge to get set for a Sunday afternoon tilt at Harvard (14-8, 7-2 Ivy). The national telecast will air live on ESPNU at 2 p.m. ET.
