Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Falls Short to Brown Friday Night, 66-64

Rubio De La Rosa’s try at the buzzer from deep hits the back iron

NEW YORK — Columbia men's basketball managed to take its first lead of Friday night's game with 4:10 left, but wound up falling short to Brown from Schiller Court at Levien Gymnasium, 66-64.

The Lions (13-10, 4-6) led for 2:13 late in the second half but Brown (8-17, 4-6) came back from a 64-62 deficit and closed out the game with two made free throws from Kino Lilly Jr. with 1:42 left and two more from Aaron Cooley with 59 seconds to go.

Columbia then came out of a timeout down two with three ticks remaining. Geronimo Rubio De La Rosa took the ball up court and got a decent look from way beyond the arc, but it hit the back iron as time expired.

"I thought we played our hearts out," head coach Jim Engles said. "It's a tough loss. A lot of credit to Brown, they did a really good job taking advantage of some key situations at the end. I thought we were right there, we just needed to make a couple of plays here and there."

Earlier in the game, Rubio De La Rosa became the 30th Lion in program history to reach 1,000 career points and 16th to achieve the feat in his first three seasons when he made a layup at the 1:51 mark of the first half. Mike Smith '20CC was the previous most recent Lion to enter the 1,000-point club.

Kenny Noland led the Columbia scoring attack with 16 points. He also added two assists. Blair Thompson also finished in double-digits with 11 points. Rubio De La Rosa finished with nine.

"It's all been natural development," Engles said on Noland's development. "We really expected this from Kenny. He's really played a big part for us. He's got a ton of more potential and we're excited he's starting to see that."

Brown took an early lead and never trailed during the first half. Columbia used an 11-0 run toward the end of the first half to tie the game at 19 with 4:16 before the break. The Bears pulled away in the final minutes of the half to take a 33-26 into the locker room.

Rubio De La Rosa and Noland each scored seven points in the first half to help lead the Lions' offense.

Columbia opened the second half on a 7-0 run to tie the game at 33 at the 17:21 mark. The Lions fell behind and tied the game multiple times, but Brown maintained control of the lead until the 4:10 mark of the second half when Noland sunk a three to put Columbia up for the first time in the game, 62-59.

A pair of free throws by Avery Brown put the Lions ahead, 64-62 with 2:08 to play.

The Lions were denied their first season sweep of the Bears since 2016. Columbia is right back at home Saturday night for a 6 p.m. tip against Yale.
