Baseball Battles No. 4 Florida in Series Finale Loss

Lions make noise in the ninth with two runs and leave two on

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Columbia baseball hung around with No. 4 Florida in all three games in its opening weekend of the 2024 season, but dropped the series finale to the Gators, 12-5, at Condron Family Ballpark on Sunday.

Columbia (0-3) trailed 12-3 going into the ninth inning, but didn't go away quietly. The Lions managed to load the bases and Griffin Palfrey ripped a two-run double with two outs to keep the visitors alive. The next batter Skye Selinsky worked the count to 2-2 but would pop out to end the ballgame.

The Gators (5-1) jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead after two innings on Sunday. Cole Hage answered with his second three-run home run in as many days, blasting one over the left field fence in the third to cut Florida's lead to 8-3.

In his season debut for Columbia, left-handed starter JD Ogden went two innings and allowed seven earned runs on six hits.

A Colby Shelton solo blast expanded Florida's lead to 9-3 in the home fifth inning. It was the Gators' second long ball of the day.

Miles Blackwell put together the second multi-hit game of his career. The junior backstop was 2-for-2 with a run scored. Palfrey had the other two-hit day for the Lions. Hunter Snyder scored the first two runs of his collegiate career on Sunday.

Derek Yoo saw three innings of action on the mound and allowed just a run on Shelton's home run. He struck out three batters in his season debut.

In his collegiate debut, Payton Soske replaced Yoo and tossed a clean sixth inning, surrendering just one walk. Will Harrigan also made his collegiate debut out of the bullpen for the Lions.

Columbia returns to New York City for its home opener next weekend against Marist. The four game series from Robertson Field at Satow Stadium will get underway Friday at 3 p.m.
