Columbia will face Drexel Saturday at 3 p.m. for the final match
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The ninth-ranked Columbia women's squash team bounced back after Thursday's loss to post a 6-3 win over No. 12 Tufts on Friday afternoon at the Arlen Specter US Squash Center.
Following the win, Columbia will move on in the consolation bracket to face No. 10 Drexel at 3 p.m. Saturday for the final match at the CSA National Collegiate Team Championships. The Lions will look to avenge a 7-2 loss to Drexel back in December.
"The women backed up a tough result yesterday against Cornell with good energy today to beat a good Tufts team," Kenneth W. Torrey Head Coach of Squash Chris Sachvie said. "There were lots of close matches and we were able to take more of those close ones."
Nourin Khalifa, Sarah Cao, Amal Izhar, Aleeza Khan, Eugenia Li and Renee Chan picked up wins Friday to help the Lions secure the win against Tufts.
Khalifa and Khan posted wins in three games to earn sweeps. Khalifa earned an 11-3, 11-8, 11-5 win over Maria Arseniev in the No. 2 position. Khan worked an 11-7, 11-1, 11-7 win against Aleezah Burhan at the No. 5 spot. Cao prevailed in four games, 11-7, 11-13, 11-6, 11-4, against Riddhi Joshi at the No. 3 spot.
Li and Chan battled to earn wins in five games. Li won the first game of her match before losing the next two. Li closed out the match by winning the next two games to defeat Nieve Monderer, 15-13, 4-11, 6-11, 11-8, 11-6 in the No. 6 position. Chan went back and forth for the first four games in the No. 9 spot, but she won the fifth game to take an 8-11, 11-6, 8-11, 11-4, 11-6 win over Sora Karanja.
