No. 6 Men’s Tennis Earns Second Straight Win over No. 31 UCLA

The Lions dominate in singles and doubles for the win

LOS ANGELES – The sixth-ranked Columbia men's tennis team earned its second straight win over No. 31 UCLA, 6-1 Monday at the Los Angeles Tennis Center after becoming the first Ivy League to ever defeat the Bruins in a 4-0 win last season.
 
Columbia earned its fourth win in a row to improve to 10-2 overall this season. The match against UCLA was the first of Columbia's spring break trip to California. The Lions will meet No. 51 Pepperdine next for a 5:00 p.m. ET first serve Wednesday. Columbia will wrap up the trip with a 4:00 p.m. ET match against UC Irvine Friday.
 
The Lions claimed the doubles point to start Monday's match. The duo of Alex Kotzen and Henry Ruger cruised past Jeffery Fradkin and Govind Nanda, 6-1 in the No. 3 doubles. No. 22 Nicolas Kotzen and Max Westphal clinched the doubles point with a dominant 6-2 win over Spencer Johnson and Emon Van Loben Sels in the No. 2 spot.
 
The 18th-ranked pair of Theo Winegar and Michael Zheng played the top doubles against Timothy Li and Giacomo Revelli. Their match went unfinished with the Columbia clinch.
 
Columbia was solid up and down the lineup in singles, earning wins in five of six matches. UCLA earned its lone team point with a win in the No. 6 doubles where Aadarsh Tripathi defeated Ruger, 6-2, 6-7(4-7), 1-0(10-4).
 
Hugo Hashimoto rolled in the No. 5 position to take a 6-2, 6-2 win against Loben Sels. No. 113 Westphal followed that up with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Gianluca Ballotta, 6-4, 6-2 in the No. 4 singles. No. 77 Alex Kotzen clinched the match for the Lions with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Revelli in the No. 2 spot.
 
The match was played out after the clinch, allowing two more Lions to pick up singles wins. No. 113 Nicolas Kotzen posted a three-set, 6-4, 3-6, 1-0(10-4) win over Johnson in the No. 3 singles. 15th-ranked Zheng battled through two sets to down No. 28 Nanda, 6-3, 7-6(7-4) in the top singles.
