Baseball Drops Series Opener at No. 11 East Carolina

Lions take on the Pirates in game two Saturday at 4 p.m.

GREENVILLE, N.C. — Columbia baseball dropped its series opener Friday night to No. 11 East Carolina, 17-3, from Lewis Field at Clark-LeClair Stadium.

Two batters into the game, Cole Hage blasted a solo home run to put the Lions (3-9) up 1-0. East Carolina (12-4) responded with a four-spot in the third, plating three runs unearned on two hits. Ryley Johnson capped off the scoring for the Pirates with a two-run home run to right field.

The score remained 4-1 until the bottom of the fifth, when East Carolina added a second four spot to break the game open and make it 8-1. The Pirates followed up with another run in the bottom of the sixth before exploding for eight runs in the bottom of the seventh to make it 17-2. 

A Sam Miller opposite field solo home run scratched across one more run in the ninth.

Trey Yesavage worked six strong innings, while striking out ten and allowing one run. The Pirates' right hander moved to 4-0 on the season. Derek Yoo allowed seven runs (four of them earned) over four innings of work and took the loss. Yoo moved to 1-1 on the year.

Columbia and East Carolina play game two of the series on Saturday at 4 p.m.
