Baseball Clubs Six Home Runs to Get Past Hofstra, 12-8

Lions get back in win column; Five record multiple hits

NEW YORK — Columbia baseball kick-started its eight-game homestand with a 12-8 victory over Hofstra on Tuesday from Robertson Field at Satow Stadium.

The Lions (4-11) clobbered two home runs in three different innings, including the first and second frames in their first home midweek matchup of the year. Columbia is now 29-5 at home since the beginning of 2022. On Tuesday, 10 of Columbia's 12 runs were a result of the long ball.

Brandon Madrigal got the start and tossed three innings of one-run ball with four strikeouts. The Lions' staff struck out 11 on the day.

Jack Kail posted the first four-hit game of his career, recording a home run and three doubles. His three two-base hits tied a program record in a single game (last done by Cole Hage in 2023). Owen Estabrook socked his first-career home run as well.

Hage blasted Columbia's first home run of the day in the opening inning to give the Lions a 2-0 lead. In the second inning, Kail led off with a solo shot followed by an Anton Lazits two-run bomb a few batters later to blow open an early 8-0 lead.

Hofstra (6-12) got on the board with an RBI single in the third inning and scored six unanswered to make it an 8-6 game in the sixth. Estabrook and Hage answered with home runs to push Columbia's lead to 12-6 in the home half of the frame.

The Pride tacked on two more runs in the eighth inning, but Justin Bowman pitched a scoreless ninth inning to secure the win. Columbia opens Ivy League play this weekend at home against Harvard.
