Baseball Sweeps Penn With 9-7 Victory on Sunday

Lions hold first place spot in Ivy standings

NEW YORK — Columbia baseball completed a three-game sweep of reigning Ivy League Champion Penn on Sunday with a 9-7 win from Robertson Field at Satow Stadium.

With the sweep, Columbia (10-12, 5-1) sits alone atop the Ivy League standings while Penn falls to 11-13 (3-3). Following Sunday's victory, head coach Brett Boretti has now tied Paul Fernandes as the program's all-time wins leader with 359. This weekend's sweep is the first over Penn since 2013.

Winners of five-straight, the Lions are now 34-6 at home since the beginning of 2022 and are 9-1 in home contests this year.

Penn opened the scoring in the third inning on a Nick Saventa two-run double down the right field line. The Lions immediately answered the next half inning to tie the game at 2-2 after Anton Lazits ripped a double to plate Jack Cooper and Skye Selinsky.

Columbia then took its first lead of the day in the fourth inning when Griffin Palfrey cracked a double to score two. Wyatt Henseler drove in a run for Penn with two outs in the fifth to make it 4-3, Columbia.

In the home fifth, the Lions broke open an 8-3 lead. Sam Miller singled in a run, then Lazits scored on a passed ball. With Miller still on, Cole Fellows blasted his third home run of the weekend to give Columbia a five-run advantage.

After Penn added a run in the sixth and seventh to make it 8-5, Cole Hage belted a triple to score Eric Jeon and push Columbia's lead to 9-5.

Brandon Madrigal and JD Ogden held off the Quakers in the final three innings to secure the win. Columbia hits the road to face UConn on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
