ITHACA, N.Y. – The Columbia softball team overcame a six-run deficit after the first inning to defeat Cornell, 12-10 on Sunday afternoon at Neimand-Robison Field.
Columbia (9-15, 4-2 Ivy) collected 14 hits in the high scoring affair to earn its second straight Ivy League series victory.
"It was really important for us to stay calm and to hunt good pitches to attack," Columbia Head Softball Coach
Jennifer Teague said. "We knew we had time. Our goal was to score a little at a time. Getting on base and timely hitting was the factor at the plate today. Also, Sarah gave us some great innings this weekend to allow us to make that come back."
Cornell got the bats going early with six runs in the bottom of the first inning of the series finale. The Big Red added a run in the second and third, and continued to hold the lead until the fourth inning.
Columbia responded to Cornell's hot start by putting up a four-spot in the top of the second inning. A wild pitch allowed Columbia's three runners to hop forward a base, allowing
Payton Shimansky to score the first run. The Lions then added three more runs on a walk, a hit batter and a fly out.
The Columbia bats stayed alive for the rest of the game as the Lions tacked on two runs in the third, two runs in the fourth, three runs in the fifth and one run in the sixth.
Maddy Rifenberick launched a two-run homer over the left field wall to pull the Lions within one in the third inning. An
Eleni Katsivalis RBI double and a Rifenberick RBI base hit in the fourth inning tied the game, 8-8.
The Lions used a three-spot in the fifth to pull away for good.
Savanna Messner hit a solo shot to lead off the inning and put Columbia in front. Two more runs scored before Columbia added another run in the sixth to finish off the 12-10 win.
Sarah Mikami (4-5) was credited with the win in 5.1 innings of work. Mikami allowed six runs on 11 hits in the outing.
Lily McCord earned the start, but was replaced after allowing four runs on one hit.
Charlotte Laidler also saw 1.2 innings of action.
