No. 28 Women’s Tennis Drops Road Contest to No. 64 Charlotte

The Lions move to 10-3 overall this season
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The 28th-ranked Columbia women's tennis lost a road match to No. 64 Charlotte, 4-1, on Friday afternoon at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex. The Lions fall to 10-3 overall this season.
Charlotte claimed the doubles point to take the early lead. The Charlotte duo of Emma Wilkins and Lucie Petruzelova defeated Gayathri Krishnan and Sophia Strugnell, 6-2 in the No. 2 doubles to get started.
Columbia evened the score in doubles as Sophia Wang and Anna Zhang worked together to take down the 37-ranked Charlotte duo of Lucia Quiterio and Ares Teixido Garcia in the top doubles.
Charlotte clinched the doubles point with a win in the No. 3 spot. Shona Nakano and Sara Suchankova posted a 6-3 victory against Winta Tewolde and Rachele Rimondini.
The Niners rolled the momentum over into singles action by winning two matches to extend the lead to 3-0. Petruzelova downed Julia Haynes, 6-0, 6-4 in the No. 2 singles and Nakano earned a 6-2, 6-2 win over Clarine Lerby in the No. 6 spot.
Columbia earned its first team point of the match when Fatima Keita defeated Teixido Garcia, 6-1, 6-4 in the No. 3 singles.
Charlotte clinched the 4-1 win as Suchankova worked through three sets to get past Salma Farhat, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 in the No. 5 spot.
UP NEXT
Columbia returns to the court next Friday as the Lions travel to Houston, Texas for the weekend. Columbia will play at Rice on Friday, March 15 at 12 p.m. ET before finishing the weekend with a 12 p.m. ET match against Tulsa Sunday in Houston.
