Baseball Splits Saturday Doubleheader With Yale

Lions fall to Yale comeback in game 1; bounce back with win in game 2

NEW YORK — Columbia baseball fell to a Yale comeback in game one, 10-8, before bouncing back with a 10-3 victory in game two on Saturday from Robertson Field at Satow Field.

Before the doubleheader, Columbia wore Lou Gehrig ALS t-shirts to raise awareness for the disease. Click here to donate to the Eleanor and Lou Gehrig ALS Center.

Between games, Columbia recognized the 2014 Ivy League Championship team on the field. Columbia (15-13, 9-2) and Yale (10-17, 5-6) conclude the three-game set on Sunday at 12 p.m.

Game 1 Recap

Columbia cruised to a 7-0 lead in the first two innings of the series opener. After starter Derek Yoo escaped a bases loaded jam with no outs, Columbia scored two runs in the home first on doubles from Griffin Palfrey and Anton Lazits.

The Lions posted a five-spot in the second inning. Kyle Corso singled in a run, then Palfrey doubled again to bring in Cole Hage. The inning was capped by a Lazits RBI single.

Columbia tacked on another run in the sixth inning on Skye Selinsky's sixth home run of the year. Yoo went seven scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and striking out five.

Yale scored 10 unanswered runs to earn the comeback win, including eight in the ninth inning. Five of the Bulldogs' runs were unearned. Columbia threatened in the next half inning but was unable to tie the game.

Selinsky belted a team-best three hits for the Lions in the series opener. Palfrey, Lazits, and Eric Jeon all recorded multi-hit games.

Game 2 Recap

Jack Cooper blasted his 12th home run of the season in the home second to give the Lions an early 1-0 lead. Yale answered in the third with an RBI single to tie the game.

The Lions added three in the third and then took a 5-1 lead after four innings. Hage doubled in two runs, Selinsky tripled in a run, then Sam Miller socked a home run to right field.

Starter Joe Sheets got the win after 5.2 innings of work, allowing one earned run with six strikeouts.

Columbia cushioned its lead in the sixth inning with a four-spot, led by a Jeon bases-clearing triple. The Lions outhit Yale, 13-5. Will Parkinson earned his first save of the season after pitching three scoreless innings, including five strikeouts, to close it out.
