Softball Splits Saturday Doubleheader Against Yale

Columbia and Yale will meet at 12:30 p.m. Sunday in the series rubber match

NEW YORK – The Columbia softball team took a 4-0 win against Yale in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader before falling to the Bulldogs in the second game to set up the series rubber match Sunday.

Cami Neal got the fireworks going quick in the first game as she took the first pitch and sent it over the right field wall to immediately put the Lions in front.

Neal's home run marked her 10th of the season, which ties the single season program record. She joins the top of the list with Taylor Troutt, Madison Gott and Sommer Gryzbek. One more home run this season would put Neal alone as the leader in single season homers.

Sarah Mikami kept the inning alive with a two-out base hit before Savanna Messner reached on a throwing error to put two Lions on base. Maddy Rifenberick stepped up next and hit an RBI single that allowed Mikami to score an unearned run to cap off the first inning with a 2-0 lead.

Columbia held its 2-0 advantage until the sixth inning when the Lions added two more runs for insurance. Caroline Palys hit a two-RBI single to left field that allowed Tatum Hubble and Mandy Pelatowski to score.

Raquel Reyes (7-9) earned the win in the first game as she fired 5.0 scoreless innings, allowing just three hits. Charlotte Laidler came in and tossed the final 2.0 innings to pick up her fourth save of the season as she tallied three strikeouts.

Yale was able to flip the script to start the second game as the Bulldogs struck for two runs in the top of the first inning. An RBI double by Willa Ferrer and an RBI triple by Lauren Perren plated Yale's two runs in the first inning. The Bulldogs added three more runs in the fourth inning to take a 5-0 lead as Carolyn Skotz launched a solo homer and Ferrer hit a two-run shot.

Looking to ignite a late rally, Rifenberick hit a two-RBI double down the left field line that scored Messner and Mikami in the bottom of the sixth inning to cut into the Yale lead. Pelatowski was able to reach with a leadoff single in the seventh inning, but the Lions were taken down in order after that to end the game.

Sarah Mikami (5-8) was charged with the loss as she earned the start and gave up two runs on three hits in the first inning. Lily McCord came in and fired 5.2 innings, allowing three runs on five hits with two strikeouts. Laidler came in to pitch for 1.0 inning and recorded a strikeout.
