Fencing Dominates at Tiger Invitational

The Lions went a perfect 5-0 at the event on Tuesday
PRINCETON, N.J. — The Columbia fencing teams rang in the new year with a perfect start, with the women posting a 3-0 mark and the men going 2-0 at the Tiger Invitational at Princeton on Tuesday. The women remain undefeated at 13-0 in dual matches, and the men move to 11-1.
First-year Will Morrill went 6-for-6 in his bouts in men's sabre, while Sofia Gaydos led the women with a 5-0 mark in women's foil.
The women started things off with a 17-10 victory over Cornell. Sophia Jakel and Mina Yamanaka swept through the Big Red in epee to give the Lions the separation they needed to pull away in round one.
The trio of Meagan Yao CoSay, Charlotte DePew and Janna Freedman went undefeated in foil to spark Columbia's 25-2 victory over NJIT in the second matchup of the day. The men dispatched the Highlanders, 20-7, thanks in part to the work of sabre. Morrill and Jackson McBride each went 3-0 and Zachary Zusin was 3-0 in foil.
Men's sabre was key again in the closest contest of the day against Princeton. Nick Harvey, McBride and Morrill teamed up to go 6-3 and foil edged out the Tigers, 5-4, to give Columbia a 15-12 victory. For the women, foil was perfect in an 18-9 triumph to close out the competition.
Columbia has four dual meets on the docket at the St. John's Super Cup docket on Sunday, January 19, in Queens. The Lions will face Harvard at 10 a.m., Ohio State at 11:15 a.m., Notre Dame at 12:30 p.m. and the Red Storm at 2:30 p.m.
