The Lions went 6-2 on the day in Queens

QUEENS, N.Y. — Wins over No. 1 Harvard highlighted the day of competition for the No. 3 Columbia fencing team at the St. John's Super Cup. The Lions went a combined 6-2 on the day, with the only blemishes coming against No. 2 Notre Dame. The women are now 16-1 in dual matches, and the men move to 14-2, with both defeats coming by one bout.

Sophia Jakel and Tierna Oxenreider each went 7-1 on the day in women's epee to lead the women's squad. Justin Haddad was 8-3 in men's epee, while Sam Kumbla and Marcel Nagimov posted 7-2 marks in men's foil.

Both teams picked up 15-12 decisions over the Crimson. On the men's side, 3-0 marks from Nagimov in foil and Haddad in epee gave the Lions the separation they needed to start the day off victorious. Jakel and Oxenreider ran the table in women's epee, while Delphine DeVore and Carolina Stutchbury won 4-of-6 bouts in foil to knock off Harvard.

In round two, the men earned another 15-12 decision over Ohio State. The trio of Bogdan Hamilton, Kumbla and Enoch Xiao won 6-of-9 matchups in the win. Women's epee continued to shine against the Buckeyes, with Oxenreider picking up three more wins and Jakel earning a victory in the final turn as Columbia picked up an 18-9 victory.

The bouts against Notre Dame went down to the wire on both sides. Kumbla went 3-0 to lead men's foil to a weapon win, but the Fighting Irish equalized with a 6-3 victory in epee and edged out the Lions, 5-4, in sabre to give the Lions just their second defeat of the season. A 7-2 performance in women's foil was not enough, as Notre Dame went 8-1 in sabre to go on for a 15-12 win.

Columbia closed things up with identical 16-11 wins over St. John's. All three weapons won the majority of their bouts, highlighted by a 6-3 win in epee. Sumin Lee went 3-0 in women's epee, and with the Red Storm fielding only one fencer in foil, the Lions coasted to an 8-1 decision.

Columbia is back in action next Sunday, January 26, at the Penn State Invitational. The Lions will face off against Penn, Haverford, Penn State, Wagner, North Carolina and the women finish the day against Temple. The action begins at 9:45 a.m.
