Men’s Basketball Edged by Yale on Saturday, 92-88

The Lions made it a three-point game with 29 seconds left, but came up short

NEW YORK — Columbia men's basketball suffered a crushing 92-88 defeat Saturday afternoon against Yale inside Schiller Court at Levien Gymnasium. The Lions fell to 11-4 overall and 0-2 in conference play. Columbia had the opportunity to tie the game in the last 29 seconds with a three, but missed.

Yale (9-6, 2-0) dealt the Lions their third consecutive loss and second home loss of the season. The Bulldogs dominated on the boards with a 44-27 advantage. Yale's John Poulakidas scored a game-high 28 points including six threes.

Avery Brown led the team with a career-high 21 points. Geronimo Rubio De La Rosa and Kenny Noland scored 17 and 16 points, respectively.

The first six minutes of the game saw five lead changes as Columbia survived a hot shooting start behind the arc from the Bulldogs. Columbia then held the lead for around five minutes before the back-and-forth resumed. Despite the Lions grabbing seven steals and forcing 11 turnovers, neither team led by more than four points in the first half. With three seconds left, Blair Thompson stole the ball and scored a buzzer-beating layup to give the Lions a 40-39 lead at the break.

Noland started the second half by scoring 12 of the Lions' first 16 points over six minutes. Columbia took its largest lead of the afternoon at 61-54 after a pass from Brown led to a Rubio De La Rosa three. Yale went on a scoring tear that the Lions were unable to stop until it was too late. The Bulldogs took the lead in the final minutes and went up by as much as 10 points.

Columbia was able to make one last push. With 30 seconds left, Brown knocked down a clutch triple to bring the game to 90-88. After Yale made one of two free throws, Columbia had one last possession to send the game to overtime, but they could not take advantage.

The Lions will head to Princeton on Monday for a contest against the Tigers. Tip-off from Jadwin Gymnasium is set for 2 p.m and can be watched live on ESPN+.
