Men’s Basketball Falls at Penn on Saturday

Brown posted a team-high 19 points on 6-13 shooting

PHILADELPHIA — Penn pulled away from Columbia men's basketball in the second half to defeat the Lions, 93-78, on Saturday afternoon at The Palestra.

Avery Brown led Columbia (11-6, 0-4) with 19 points. Kenny Noland poured in 16 points and added a team-high six assists. Noah Robledo had 11 points.

Columbia and Penn (6-11, 2-2) were tied 13-13 at the first media timeout. Geronimo Rubio De La Rosa had Columbia's first five points, and Robbie Stankard drilled both of his three-point attempts early on.

Penn then used an 8-0 run to lead 22-16 with 11:47 until the break. After being down by 13, the Lions broke off a 7-0 run over a two-minute span. 

Columbia's run became a 16-3 spurt after Stankard knocked down his third triple to tie it at 39-39 just before the half. Penn held a 44-42 halftime lead. Robledo and Noland each had double-figures scoring at the break. Columbia was 9-13 (69.2 percent) from beyond the arc in the first 20 minutes.

Penn responded out of the break with a 6-0 run early in the second half to lead 56-46 four minutes in. The Lions went nearly eight minutes without a field goal later in the frame and went down by 21. Penn led by as many as 27 with 5:09 to play.

The Lions were 1-7 from three-point range in the second half. Penn finished 18-35 from beyond the arc. Sam Brown had a game-high 30 points for the Quakers.

Columbia returns to New York City for its first Ivy League back-to-back weekend of the season. The Lions host Harvard on Friday at 7 p.m. and then Dartmouth on Saturday at 6 p.m.
