Columbia falls just short in a 22-19 loss to the Hoosiers on the road
ELLETSVILLE, Ind. – The Columbia wrestling team came up just short of defeating Big Ten foe Indiana at Edgewood High School on Friday night. The Lions got four bout wins, including an upset victory by Lorenzo Frezza in the 22-19 loss.
The 26th-ranked Hoosiers opened the dual with a win at 125, but the Lions secured back-to-back victories at 133 and 141 to jump out to an 8-3 lead early. Sulayman Bah battled but fell to Indiana's Jacob Moran via a 7-3 decision to open the match.
Evin Gursoy and Frezza got the momentum back in the Lions' corner. Gursoy notched a win via an 8-0 major decision over Jackson Blum. Frezza took down #27 Henry Porter in an 11-2 major decision.
Indiana regained control of the match thanks to wins at 157 and 165. #21 Tyler Lillard took down #25 Cesar Alvan in overtime, giving the Hoosiers a 14-8 lead.
Nick Fine swung the momentum back in favor of the Lions with a dominating win over #32 Derek Gilcher. Fine defeated Gilcher with a 20-4 technical fall.
Indiana put the match away with wins at 184 and 197. #22 Sam Goin defeated #12 Aaron Ayzerov via a 10-3 decision, and #11 Gabe Sollars handed Adam Haselius his first loss of the season via a 15-0 tech fall.
Vincent Mueller cut the deficit to three with a win via fall over Matt Kowalski in the 285 bout. Mueller notched his second win via fall under a minute, pinning Kowalski in 37 seconds.
"Tonight had its highs and lows," Andrew F. Barth Head Coach of Wrestling Donny Pritzlaf said. "We took a clear step forward from last weekend, but there's still a lot of work ahead if we're going to build the season we want. We need belief, relentless effort, and a willingness to fight for every inch, every second. Huge, gutsy performance from Vincent Mueller—mentally, he's really turning the corner. Big momentum heading into Sunday."
Columbia returns to action on Sunday when they take on Hofstra in Hempstead, N.Y. Sunday's match will be streamed on FloWrestling. Fans can also follow live results at statabroadcast.com.
