Columbia wins eight bouts in first win of the season
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. — Columbia dominated start to finish Sunday afternoon, rolling past Hofstra 32–6 behind eight individual victories, two pins, and a string of momentum-swinging performances that showcased both depth and control across the lineup.
Columbia (1-1) opened with four straight wins to seize a 13–0 lead, absorbed a brief Hofstra push at 157 and 165, then closed the dual with a crushing 19–0 run highlighted by bonus-point wins from No. 29 Nick Fine, No. 16 Aaron Ayzerov and heavyweight Vincent Mueller.
Sulayman Bah, Evin Gursoy, #29 Lorenzo Frezza, Richard Fedalen, Fine, Ayzerov, Adam Haselius and Mueller all posted wins for the Lions. Fine and Gursoy delivered major decisions, while Ayzerov and Mueller provided the dual's two wins by fall.
Ayzerov's 13–0 blitz before the fall and Mueller's 51-second pin capped a dominant stretch in the upperweights. Frezza, ranked No. 29, delivered one of the dual's most dramatic finishes with a late takedown to swing the 141-pound match.
The Pride (1-3) earned victories from Frank Volpe at 157 and Jake Slotnick at 165. Volpe scraped out a 2–0 decision in a defensive battle, and Slotnick upset No. 26 Cesar Alvan with an 8–6 decision that featured a pair of late takedowns to keep Hofstra briefly within reach.
Bah set the tone for the afternoon with a composed, wire-to-wire performance. He scored takedowns in both the first and second periods, controlled nearly a minute of riding time, and never allowed Strobel to threaten. His riding-time point sealed a decisive 8–2 victory.
Gursoy earned his second victory of the weekend. Against the Pride, he delivered the first bonus-point blow, using a reversal and late second-period takedown to break open the match. His 2:50 of riding time secured the major decision and pushed Columbia's team lead to seven.
Frezza completed a clutch comeback. Trailing 3–0 entering the second, he escaped, then used a third-period takedown with 46 seconds left to tie it. A stalling point against Liardi swung the bout in Frezza's favor as he closed out a narrow 5–4 win.
Fedalen capitalized on a first-period stalling point and added a quick escape in the third. Even after giving up a penalty point, his brief riding time advantage secured the decision and completed Columbia's 4–0 start.
Hofstra cut the Lions' lead to seven with back-to-back wins at 157 and 165. In the 157 bouts, Scanlan and Volpe wrestled scoreless through one, but Volpe's escape in the second held as the difference. In the 165 bout, Hofstra's Slotnick pulled off the upset, with a series of escapes and two takedowns.
Fine restarted the Columbia surge, dominating neutral with takedowns in the first and third and adding an escape and riding-time point. His 1:34 of control time pushed the bout into major-decision territory and extended the Lions' cushion.
Ayzerov blew the dual open with the most overwhelming performance of the day. After a takedown and four-point near-fall in the first, he added an escape, another takedown, and a stalling point before finishing the match with a second-period fall. He built a 13–0 lead before securing the pin.
Haselius survived a wild first period that included takedowns both ways, then took over with strong third-period riding and a clutch takedown with just over a minute left. His riding-time point made it a five-point victory.
Mueller slammed the door with the dual's second pin, scoring a fast takedown and building enough riding time to earn the point before finishing Sans in under a minute. The pin was Mueller's second of the weekend and third of the season.
Columbia returns to action next Friday when the Lions host Michigan at Levien Gymnasium. It will be Columbia's 2025-26 home debut.
