Wrestling Falls to No. 11 Michigan in Home Opener

Lions get wins from Alvan, Gursoy, and Frezza
NEW YORK – The Columbia wrestling had its 2025-26 home debut spoiled when No. 11 Michigan came away with a 25-9 win at Levien Gym on Friday night. The Lions won three bouts, with Cesar Alvan upsetting No. 15 Dylan Gilcher.
Columbia (1-2) struck first with Alvan getting his first signature win of the season, defeating Gilcher via a 5-4 decision. The Lions also got wins from Evin Gursoy and No. 28 Lorenzo Frezza.
Michigan (3-2) countered, winning the next five bouts. No. 11 Beau Mantanona defeated #32 Nick Fine 11-7 to even the dual at 3-3. No. 7 Brock Mantanona came away with an 8-7 win over No. 16 Aaron Ayzerov at 184 with Mantanona scoring the decisive point late in the third frame. No. 32 Hayden Walters made it 9-3 in favor of the Wolverines with an 8-2 win over Adam Haselius.
At the 285 bout, No. 5 Taye Ghadialik gave Michigan some separation, defeating Vincent Mueller by a 21-5 technical fall. No. 24 Diego Sotelo got the better of Sulayman Bah, winning 12-6 to make it 17-3 Michigan.
At 133, the Lions cut the deficit to 11, when Gursoy blanked Gauge Botero 3-0. Frezza secured the final win of the night for the Lions, defeating Eren Sement via a 9-8 decision at 141.
The Wolverines closed out the match with wins at 149 and 157. No. 3 Lachlan McNiel defeated Richard Fedalen with an 8-2 decision. No. 23 Cameron Catrabone took down Charles Scanlan in a 16-0 technical fall in the finale.
Columbia returns to action on Sunday when they participate in the Black Knight Invitational hosted by Army. The event is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
