Gaythri Krishan advanced to the consolation semifinals
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Columbia women's tennis team saw its fall slate wrap up this weekend. Gayathri Krishnan and Malak El Allami competed at the ITA East Sectionals, hosted by UNC at the Chewning Tennis Center, aiming to secure a bid to the NCAA Singles Championships, but fell short.
To qualify for the NCAA Singles Championships later this month at Lake Nona, Fla., the duo needed to reach at least the semifinals of the tournament.
In the round of 32, Krishnan fell to NC State's Gabriella Broadfoot, 6-3, 6-3. El Allami was defeated in straight sets by Virginia's Isabelle Lacy, 6-1, 6-4.
In the consolation round, Krishnan bounced back, defeating Penn State's Maiko Uchijima, 6-2, 6-4. This victory was especially significant for Krishnan, as Uchijima had previously beaten her in the third-place match at the ITA Sectionals.
In the quarterfinals, Krishnan defeated Yale's Orly Ogilvy in the tiebreaker, 6-1, 2-6(10-6). The reigning Ivy League Player of the Year saw her run end in the consolation semifinals, falling to Kaitlyn Carnicella of South Carolina, 6-1, 4-6(10-7).
