Four Lions total place at prestigious tournament

LAS VEGAS – Four members of the Columbia wrestling team placed on Saturday at the prestigious Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invite. Highlighting the Lions' strong run was the fourth-place finish from junior Lorenzo Frezza at the 141 weight class. Cesar Alvan finished fifth at 165, Sulayman Bah and Aaron Ayzerov finished eighth at 125 and 184, respectively.

Frezza's run of five consecutive bouts won came to an end in the third-place match on Saturday evening. Frezza, ranked No. 25 in the FloWrestling poll, faced off against Stanford's redshirt freshman Jack Consiglio, who entered the weekend ranked No. 32. Consiglio came away with an 8-4 win thanks to a pair of takedowns in the first and second period.

Frezza made a run late, however. Trailing 7-1, he secured a takedown with 1:31 remaining to make it 7-4, but could not pull any closer.

Frezza began the day with a 4-3 decision over Utah Valley's Haiden Drury in the consolation round of four. He opened the bout with a 3-point takedown early in the first period and closed out the bout with an escape midway through the third period to secure the win.

He wrapped up the morning session by getting even against Nash Singleton of Oregon State, winning 8-5. After falling behind 3-0 thanks to a takedown, Frezza scored four points late in the first period with an escape and a takedown in the final 25 seconds. In the second period, he took an 8-3 lead thanks to an escape and a takedown in the closing seconds of the second period. Singleton scored two points late in the second and midway through the third on a pair of escapes, but it was not enough as Frezza advanced to the third-place bout against Consiglio.

Alvan captured fifth thanks to an 11-3 win via major decision over San Diego State's Marcus Espinosa-Owens. Alvan jumped out to an early lead in the first with a takedown midway through the period. He put the match away with an escape and two takedowns in the third.

Alvan opened the day with a 1-0 win over Northern Illinois' Brett Smith. Alvan scored the only point of the bout with an escape at the 1:41 mark in the second period and held off Smith for the remainder of the match to advance to the consolation semifinals, where he fell to Princeton's Ty Whalen 6-4.

Bah finished in eighth after going 0-2 against a pair of ranked opponents. Bah started the day taking on No. 28-ranked Dedrick Navarrow of Northwestern in the consolation round of four. Navarro came away with a 17-0 tech fall win.

In the seventh-place bout, Bah squared off against a familiar opponent, Michigan's Diego Sotelo. Sotelo, who is ranked No. 23 once again, got the better of Bah, winning via a 15-0 technical fall.

Ayzerov also finished in eighth place. Facing No. 21 Sal Perrine of Ohio, Ayzerov lost by fall at the 4:23 mark. He pulled out of the seventh-place bout against Cal Poly's Ceasar Garza.

Columbia will return to action on Sunday, Dec. 21, when the Lions take on Clarion and Rider in a pair of duals hosted by Rider in Lawrenceville, N.J.
