Baseball Drops Series Opener at San Diego

Skye Selinsky records a three-hit game; Fishel drives in a pair

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Columbia baseball fell to San Diego, 12-6, in the series opener Saturday night at Fowler Park.

San Diego (3-14) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Lions starting pitcher Alex Sotiropoulos battled out of a bases loaded jam after that, recording a strikeout and getting a double play.

Jack Kail got Columbia (1-10) on the board with an RBI double in the second inning. Later in the inning, Ben Fishel singled in a run to cut the lead to 3-2.

The Toreros tacked on seven runs in the home second on five hits. Griffin Palfrey blasted his first home run of the season in the fifth inning to make it 10-3.

Evan Kleinhans was the first reliever out of the Columbia bullpen. He tossed five innings and allowed three runs.

San Diego made it a 12-3 game in the seventh inning, but the Lions didn't go away quietly. In the ninth inning, Anton Lazits drove in a run on an RBI double. Lazits would score when a pitch with the bases loaded hit Fishel. Tate Vogler added an RBI with a walk while the bases were still full. The rally and game ended when Hunter Snyder struck out swinging.

Columbia and San Diego continue the four-game set on Sunday with a doubleheader. First pitch in game one is set for 3 p.m. ET, followed by game two beginning 40 minutes after.
