Baseball Clobbers Manhattan on Wednesday, 19-4

The Lions set a program single-game record with nine stolen bases

NEW YORK — Columbia baseball exploded for 10 runs in the eighth inning, surging past Manhattan for a 19-4 victory on Wednesday from Robertson Field at Satow Stadium. The Lions tallied 14 hits and capitalized on seven Jaspers errors.

Ben Fishel led Columbia (8-11, 3-0) with an RBI single and stole three bases, while Jack Kail contributed with a strong showing, scoring three times. The Lions broke the program's single-game stolen base record with nine steals. The previous mark was last set on April 3, 2022 at Princeton when the Lions swiped seven steals.

The Lions built an early lead, scoring in each of the first four innings. After Manhattan (8-15, 3-6) narrowed the gap to 8-4 by the fifth, Columbia's relentless offense broke the game open in the eighth. Pinch-hitter Kyle Corso added a run-scoring single, and Jimmy Chadwell's pinch-hit double brought in two more. Dean Reynolds and Hunter Snyder also added RBI singles.

On the mound, Brendan Murphy got the start and tossed three scoreless innings. Will Harrigan, Evan Kleinhans, Baylor Hicks, and Justin Bowman each didn't allow an earned run. Manhattan struggled defensively, committing seven errors. Columbia's pitching recorded 11 strikeouts.

Columbia visits Princeton at Clarke Field this weekend for a three-game series. Saturday's doubleheader begins at 11:30 a.m. and Sunday's series finale starts at 12 p.m.
