Fencing Preps for NCAA Regionals Sunday

The Lions will send 24 fencers in their final opportunity to qualify for NCAA Championship bids

NEW YORK — Columbia fencing will send the maximum 24 qualifiers (12 men, 12 women) to the NCAA Northeast Regionals, hosted by Tufts, in Medford, Massachusetts, on Sunday, March 9. The Lions will face off against the region's best during the one-day event.

The competition will begin at 10 a.m. with pool play, followed by the knockout rounds in the afternoon.

The Columbia women are ranked No. 1 and the men are No. 2 in the United States Fencing Coaches Association's SPI metric and the coaches poll. The women finished the dual meet season with a 33-2 record, and the men were 29-3 on the year.

All four of the Lions' individual Ivy League Champions will compete on Sunday. The group includes Samarth Kumbla in men's foil, Will Morrill in men's sabre, Justin Haddad, who also picked up a silver at last year's Regionals in men's epee and Tierna Oxenreider in women's epee.

In total, 18 fencers have NCAA experience under their belts, highlighted by two more 2024 medalists, Marsel Nagimov (bronze – men's foil) and Mina Yamanaka (silver – women's epee).

The NCAA Northeast Regional competition helps determine the qualifying fencers for the NCAA Division I National Championship, which will take place at Penn State University from March 20-23.

Only Columbia's top two fencers for the six weapons (six men's and six women's) can qualify for the National Championships. No qualifiers are official until the NCAA's announcement on Tuesday, March 11, when NCAA Championship selections are posted.
