ATHENS, Ga. — Columbia baseball jumped out to an early lead but couldn't hold off No. 5 Georgia, falling 14-5 on Friday afternoon at Foley Field.
The Lions (1-7) started strong, plating three runs in the first inning behind a three-run home run from Anton Lazits. Georgia (16-1) quickly responded, scoring four in the second and never looking back.
Columbia added two more runs in the sixth on a two-run shot from Skye Selinsky, cutting the deficit to 10-5, but Georgia's offense proved too potent. The Bulldogs blasted five home runs, including two from Tre Phelps, to put the game out of reach.
Freshman Alex Sotiropoulos (1-2) took the loss for Columbia, allowing seven runs on six hits and struck out four over three innings, while Georgia's pitching staff limited the Lions to seven hits on the day. Zach Brown picked up the win in relief after tossing three innings of two-run ball to improve to 3-1. Jordan Stephens threw three shutout innings to earn a nine-out save, his second of the year.
Jackson Brewer collected two hits in five at-bats and scored a run for the Lions.
Columbia continues the series with the Bulldogs on Saturday, March 8, with a single game. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m. on SEC Network+.
