Emmy Davis Throws Gem as Softball Splits Friday Twin Billing

Head coach Jennifer Teague wins 150th game at Columbia

FT. MEYERS, Fla. – The Columbia softball team got a tremendous pitching performance from Emmy Davis in game one of Friday's doubleheader against Toledo. The Lions fell to tournament host Florida Gulf Coast in game two.

"Obviously big to start out with a win," coach Jennifer Teague said. "I thought we did well, especially early against Toledo. I think we went a little bit into coast mode at the end, but we made solid contact down the stretch, just kept hitting it at people. I would have liked to see them score a little more. It's always great to get a win.  Against Florida Gulf Coast in game two, I'm frustrated that we only had two hits. We've seen that pitcher before, we were just late making adjustments. We started making better contact late in the game, but again, kept hitting it right at people. It's just a learning process, making sure to progress and fail forward. That was my message to them, we've got to figure out a way to move runners over."

TOLEDO RECAP
Columbia (3-4) began the day with a thrilling 2-0 win over Toledo. Freshman pitcher Emmy Davis (1-1) earned her first collegiate win, tossing a three-hit complete game shutout to stymy the Rockets (5-10).

A key to Davis's success was her ability to limit the damage. Toledo managed to get just five base runners aboard and Davis stranded them all. The Rockets were 0-for-7 on the day with runners on base.

"I think Emmy had just a fantastic day," said Teague. "For her second start as a freshman to throw a three-hit complete game shutout; if we can continue to get that from her, we are going to have a pretty good year. She was super poised, the defense was great behind her, we scored when we needed to. I think she was fantastic."

With two outs in the bottom of the second inning, the Lions got a clutch at bat from Olivia Madkins, who roped a single into right field scoring Sarah Mikami from third and Maddie Souza from second. Mikami started the rally beating out an infield single to second. Souza walked and Juju O'Brien singled to left field to load the bags for Madkins.

The win against the Rockets was Teague's 150th as head coach at Columbia.

 FLORIDA GULF COAST RECAP
In game two, the Lions offense could only muster two hits against FGCU's starter Allison Sparkman (7-7).

Mikami singled up the middle in the top of the second, part of her three hit day overall. Mandy Pelatowski had the other Lion hit.

Taking the loss was starter Jordan Hill (1-1) who went 4.0 innings, surrendering 11 hits, eight runs, seven earned, with two walks and two strikeouts.

"We will continue to get better tomorrow, I'm really excited to play them tomorrow a third time. Tomorrow should be a good day too." Teague added.
