Columbia improves to 9-3 overall this season

NEW YORK – The tenth-ranked Columbia men's tennis team posted a 7-0 victory over Delaware on Saturday afternoon inside the Philip and Cheryl Milstein Family Tennis Center.

Columbia extends their win streak to four straight and improves to 9-3 overall this season. The Lions have now earned three straight 7-0 victories with wins over No. 46 Tulsa, No. 67 Penn State and Delaware.

Columbia cruised through doubles with wins in the one and two matches to secure the doubles point. The 36th-ranked duo of Michael Zheng and Nicolas Kotzen posted a 6-2 win over Piotr Siekanowicz and Euan Mackenzie in the No. 1 spot for the first doubles win. Max Westphal and Sachin Palta clinched the doubles point for the Lions with a 6-1 win against Karol Malirz and Tobey Lock in the No. 2 spot.

The Lions didn't let up heading into singles, as Columbia captured the first four victories in straight sets. No. 1 Zheng opened the scoring in the top singles match, cruising to a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Malirz. Westphal, Palta, and Thanaphat Boosarawongse followed suit, earning wins in the three, four and five positions to clinch the TEAM victory for the Lions. Westphal bested Lock 6-1, 6-2, while Palta defeated Alex Gluck 6-3, 6-0. Boosarawongse got past Aristotelis Bezianis, 6-2, 6-2.

Kotzen and Hugo Hashimoto each battled back after losing the first set to force a 10-point third set tiebreaker in lieu of playing the entire third set. Kotzen rallied to defeat Siekanowicz in the No. 2 singles 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (10-8), while Hashimoto prevailed to earn a 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-3) victory over Mackenzie in the No. 4 spot to help the Lions preserve the 7-0 shutout.
