NEW YORK – The Columbia softball team battled late but could not overcome a 6-1 deficit, falling to Brown 9-3 in the rubber match on Monday afternoon at the Columbia Softball Stadium.
The Lions (14-15, 7-5 Ivy) trailed 6-1 late in the contest, but after an RBI single from
Cami Neal and a sacrifice fly by
Maddie Souza, Columbia had the tying run to the plate with one out in the bottom of the sixth.
Unfortunately, that is where the rally ended as Brown (21-11, 7-5 Ivy) ended the threat and put the game away scoring three runs in the seventh.
Neal led the Lions with a pair of hits and drove in a run. Souza and
Payton Shimansky also knocked in a run each to lead the Columbia offense.
Brown displayed its power, clubbing six extra base hits, including three home runs. Laurel Moody hit her league-leading 13th home run in the seventh to put the game on ice.
Bears' starter Alexis Guevara (11-5) notched her second win of the series. She tossed a seven hit, complete game, scattering three runs with a pair of strikeouts.
The loss went to
Jordan Hill (5-6) who went 2.0 complete, allowing five hits, three runs.
Defensively, the Lions put on a show, recording a pair of dramatic outfield assists. For the second consecutive game
Olivia Madkins threw out a runner at home attempting to score.
Later in the contest, after a single by the Bears,
Eleni Katsivalis started a double play throwing out a runner at home on the 9-2 putout. Catcher
Caroline Palys completed the twin killing throwing down to second for the 6-2 putout to end Browns' threat in the fourth.
