Fencing Sees Success at Junior Worlds and USA Nationals

The Lions had five medalists at the two events

WUXI, China & LOS ANGELES — Columbia fencing posted five combined medals at the World Junior Championships in Rio de Janeiro and the USA National Championships in Los Angeles last week. Will Morrill won a gold medal with the United States' sabre team, and Sophia Jakel and Sumin Lee earned bronze in the women's epee team event at Worlds. At the April NAC, Sidarth Kumbla '22CC and James Bourtis '23CC finished second and third in the Division I Foil competition.

In addition, three incoming student-athletes medaled at the events and the Lions totaled 13 finishes in the top 32.

Morrill and the U.S. won five matchups, including a 45-41 victory over Turkey to claim the gold. The first-year and Ivy League Rookie of the Year won all three bouts in the finals to help the Americans reach the top of the podium. It marks the third straight year Team USA has won the team event.

Jakel and Lee each fenced in four rounds for the U.S., including the championship, who went 5-1 in the team event.

Sidarth Kumbla earned the top seed and ran the table until the final bout against Nick Itkin. Bourtis reached the semifinals before ultimately falling to Itkin.
