STONY BROOK, N.Y — Columbia baseball used a fast start and timely pitching to defeat Stony Brook, 6-3, Wednesday afternoon at Joe Nathan Field.
The Lions (19-16) plated five runs across the first two innings, highlighted by a three-run homer from shortstop Sam Miller in the second. Miller finished 2-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored to extend his hitting streak to 10 games.
Skye Selinsky also added a solo home run and went 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.
Columbia's bullpen was steady and combined for seven innings of one-run ball, with Ray Huke earning a three-inning save for his second of the year. Justin Bowman started and picked up the win after tossing two innings in a designated bullpen game for the Lions.
The Lions used a Miller single and a pair of walks to load the bases in the top of the first to set up a two-run single by Jack Kail to open the scoring.
Stony Brook (21-17) opened with a two-run first, thanks to a two-run homer from Nico Azpilicueta, before the Lions went on top for good in the top of the second.
Miller put a charge into one to straight center to knock in Tate Vogler and Hunter Snyder for his Ivy League-leading 12th dinger of the year to make it 5-2. The Seawolves pulled within one on a Chanz Doughty double down the line in the bottom of the third. However, that would be the last hit for Stony Brook the rest of the afternoon.
The win pushed the Lions' winning streak up to six and gave Stony Brook its first midweek loss of the season.
Columbia will face Penn this weekend in Philadelphia in a battle for first place in the Ivy League standings. Both teams sit at 11-4 in conference play with six games to play.
Due to inclement weather in the forecast, the slate will now begin with a single game on Friday, April 25 at 2 p.m., followed by a doubleheader on Sunday, April 7, with game one set to begin at 11:30 a.m. All three contests can be seen on ESPN+.
