Lions sweep Bulldogs to remain undefeated in Ivy League play
NEW YORK – The eighth-ranked Columbia men's tennis team showed little signs of fatigue after playing their second match in as many days. The Lions quickly dispatched No. 50 Yale, sweeping the Bulldogs 4-0 on Sunday afternoon at the Philip & Cheryl Milstein Family Tennis Center.
Columbia (13-4, 3-0 Ivy) continues its strong start in Ivy League play. The Lions remain undefeated and have yet to surrender a point, defeating Cornell 4-0, Brown 7-0, and now Yale 4-0.
Max Westphal and Sachin Palta secured the first win for the Lions in doubles play. The duo was clinical in their win over Krish Gupta and Dylan Tsoi 6-1 in the No. 2 spot. On the No. 1 court, Michael Zheng and Nicolas Kotzen secured the doubles point with a 6-2 victory over Jason Shuler/Jim Ji.
In the singles match, Thanaphat Boosarawongse secured the first point for the Lions, defeating Dylan Tsoi 6-4, 6-0 at the No. 6 spot. It is Boosarawongse's third-consecutive win in singles play, he improves to 16-8 overall.
Kotzen moved the Lions one point closer to victory with an efficient straight sets win over Edward Liao, winning 6-3, 6-2. Kotzen extends his unbeaten streak to 10 matches in singles play and is now 22-10 on the year.
Hugo Hashimoto secured the match with a straight sets win over Eric Li, winning 6-4, 6-4. In the second set, Hashimoto saw himself trailing 2-0 before coming back to win the set and the match. Zheng, Westphal, and Palta were all leading in their respective matches when the Lions clinched.
