Field Hockey Drops Ivy League Opener to Cornell

J. Solari Etcheberry and Abate each scored for the Lions

NEW YORK — Columbia field hockey dropped its conference opener to Cornell, 5-2, on Friday afternoon at the Columbia Field Hockey Complex.

Cornell (4-0, 1-0) stormed out to a 4-0 lead in the first quarter, with Uma Kading scoring twice in the opening eight minutes. Jenna Villeneuve and Ashley Plzak added goals later in the period for Cornell.

Columbia (3-2, 0-1) cut into the deficit in the second half. Jacinta Solari Etcheberry scored off a penalty corner 8:45 into the third quarter. Sophia Abate was credited with the assist. 

Kading then completed her hat trick with 11:36 remaining to push Cornell's lead back to four. Abate answered with a goal of her own less than two minutes later, but the Lions could not get closer.

Julia Ramsey and Annabel Cheveley each had two assists for Cornell, while goalkeeper Jane McNally made three saves. Columbia's Margot Houle finished with seven saves in the loss.

Cornell held a 16-9 advantage in shots (13-5 on goal) with each team registering eight corners in the match. The Lions host Brown next Friday at 3 p.m.
