Field Hockey Dominates No. 18 UAlbany in 3-0 Season-Opening Win on Friday

Adams, J. Solari Etcheberry, and Kaczor score; Houle records seven saves

ALBANY, N.Y. — Columbia field hockey blanked No. 18 UAlbany, 3-0, in Friday's season opener at Alumni Turf.

The victory is Columbia's first over a ranked opponent since 2019 and the second shutout in a road season opener in program history. The win is also head coach Niki Miller's first over a ranked opponent.

Goalkeeper Margot Houle made seven saves to earn her first collegiate career win. Columbia (1-0) outshot UAlbany (3-1), 18-15, with the Great Danes holding the shots on goal advantage, 7-6.

Lizzie Adams found the back of the cage for Columbia's first goal of the season with 7:38 left in the second quarter. Mckenzie Bloom was credited with an assist. Jacinta Solari Etcheberry followed up two minutes later with a goal to put the Lions up 2-0 before halftime.

Nearly 11 minutes into the third quarter of her collegiate debut, Izzy Kaczor scored her first career goal off a pass from Sophia Abate.

In a scoreless first quarter, Jacinta Solari Etcheberry recorded five of Columbia's six shots and got two on the cage. The Lions held the Great Danes without a shot in the opening 15 minutes.

Columbia hosts LIU on Sunday at 11:30 for its home opener at the Columbia Field Hockey Complex.
